What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is that part of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of irregular teeth–often called malocclusions or dentofacial anomalies. Practice in this discipline requires strong professional skills in order to properly plan, manufacture, set up, and control the dento-orthopedic devices needed to align the teeth, jaws and soft tissues that contribute to dentofacial harmony.

An orthodontist is a highly qualified specialist whose expertise is the alignment and coordination of teeth and jaws in children, adolescents and adults.

How does one become an orthodontist?

To become a certified orthodontist, a qualified dentist must successfully complete a full-time two to three-year orthodontic residency program recognized by the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.
